The Lake Mývatn area is by many considered the most beautiful place in Iceland. This has been one of Iceland’s most popular tourist destinations for years. An amazing journey through an area of extreme contrasts and nature’s diversity. The lake area has been a filming location for major Hollywood films and TV shows, such as Game of Thrones, Fast & Furious and Star Wars.
The tour guides are local experts that know the area like the back of their hands and are storytellers at heart.
The tour is a private excursion customized to your needs, for example to Cruise Ship arrival and departure.
Tour starts with a departure from Akureyri. We drive east from Akureyri, cross Eyjafjörður fjord and enjoy the view of the town, the ocean and the mountains surrounding the fjord.
After only a half hour drive, we arrive at the picturesque Goðafoss Waterfall. Goðafoss plays an important role in the Icelandic history, particularly in connection with the introduction of Christianity. From there we go on an amazing journey through areas of extreme contrasts, bird life, flora, lava fields, geothermal activity, geology, and saga.
Our first stop at the Lake Mývatn area are the picturesque Skútustaðagígar Psuedo Craters, formed from explosions when the flowing hot lava met with the ice-cold water from the lake. We enjoy the great panoramic view of the area.
After that we arrive at Dimmuborgir Lava Fields, full of lava-pillars and formations that are rich of mythical sagas and ghoulish trails. Next, we drive to the warm underground river in Grjótagjá Rift, where the rift between the Eurasian & American Continents is very visible. The final stop by Lake Mývatn is at Námafjall and the geothermal area of Hverir Mud Pools, with steaming fumaroles, boiling mud pools and sulphur pits.
In summertime we are able to visit Mt. Krafla volcano area and Víti explosion crater but in winter time this visit depends on weather and road conditions.
Various photo stops are added to the tour depending on the weather.
Before returning back to Akureyri we visit the Mývatn Nature Baths. The baths are located in the between lava fields where you can soak in a relaxing geothermal lagoon.
