The Lake Mývatn area is by many considered the most beautiful place in Iceland. This has been one of Iceland’s most popular tourist destinations for years. An amazing journey through an area of extreme contrasts and nature’s diversity. The lake area has been a filming location for major Hollywood films and TV shows, such as Game of Thrones, Fast & Furious and Star Wars.
We adjust the departure time and length so it will fit the docking time of each cruise ship at Akureyri Port. The return time is minimum 30 minutes before ship’s departure.
Tour starts with a departure from Akureyri Port. We drive east from Akureyri, cross Eyjafjörður fjord and enjoy the view of the town, the ocean and the mountains surrounding the fjord.
After only a half hour drive, we arrive at the picturesque Goðafoss Waterfall. Goðafoss plays an important role in the Icelandic history, particularly in connection with the introduction of Christianity. From there we go on an amazing journey through areas of extreme contrasts, bird life, flora, lava fields, geothermal activity, geology, and saga.
Our first stop at the Lake Mývatn area are the picturesque Skútustaðagígar Psuedo Craters, formed from explosions when the flowing hot lava met with the ice-cold water from the lake. We enjoy the great panoramic view of the area.
After that we arrive at Dimmuborgir Lava Fields, full of lava-pillars and formations that are rich of mythical sagas and ghoulish trails. Next, we drive to the warm underground river in Grjótagjá Rift, where the rift between the Eurasian & American Continents is very visible. The final stop by Lake Mývatn is at Námafjall and the geothermal area of Hverir Mud Pools, with steaming fumaroles, boiling mud pools and sulphur pits.
Various photo stops are added to the tour depending on the weather. The tour ends with a return to port in Akureyri, in time for your ship’s departure.

We charge a 20% deposit on our website for securing a seat on our tours. The remainder of the cost (80%) is then charged upon arrival. You can pay with cash or card upon arrival. We accept all major cards and currencies. The deposit is non refundable, but can be forwarded to a new booking (either a new tour or a new date of departure). The reason we do not refund the deposit is that costs for the booking have already been created, we have credit card fees, online advertising costs and service desk employees.← Frequently Asked Questions
